Asda introduces 100% recyclable steak packaging

In-line with its ongoing commitment to ‘use less and recycle more’, and ahead of National Recycle Week (September 23 – 29), Asda is announcing the move of its range of Extra Special Aberdeen Angus Steaks into recyclable cardboard trays.

The removal of over two million black plastic trays across its entire Aberdeen Angus steak offering will see over 50 tonnes of plastic saved annually – with the price remaining unchanged – providing steak-loving households with quality steak at great value.

Available from 16th September in all Asda stores and online shopping, the forward-thinking packaging launches across:

– Asda Extra Special Aberdeen Angus Sirloin Steak (227g)

– Asda Extra Special Aberdeen Angus Sirloin Steak (255g)

– Asda Extra Special Aberdeen Angus Ribeye Steak (227g)

Gavin Thompson, Asda’s steak buyer comments: “The change in steak packaging marks the next step in our commitment to use less and recycle more, something which we are very passionate about delivering for our customers and colleagues as we strive to make all our own-brand packaging 100% recyclable by 2025.

“There is still a lot of confusion around packaging and what can or cannot be recycled. The move to cardboard trays means customers don’t have to prioritise plastic reduction over grocery decision making, ensuring they can continue purchasing quality steak at the same price, but with the added value of recycle-ready packaging.”

Asda has already removed 6,500 tonnes of packaging from own brand products in the last 18 months, including on baby wipes, greeting cards, bedding, pizza trays and swedes. The retailer has also commitment to making all its own brand packaging fully recyclable by 2025 in a bid to reduce, re-sue and recycle more plastic from across the business.

Asda’s new Aberdeen Angus steak packaging will roll-out in stores nationally from 16th September.
