The Body Shop has “no plans” to advertise in the Daily Mail anymore

In a series of tweets to various customers, including internet campaigning group Stop Funding Hate, the Body Shop has stated it now has “no plans” to continue advertising with the Daily Mail. The Body Shop are currently owned by French cosmetics giant L’Oréal.  The company have previously run voucher promotions in both the Mail and Mail on Sunday.

A number of customers quoted a tweet to the Body Shop UK twitter feed from Stop Funding Hate. The tweet highlighted a quote from a L’Oreal Ethics document which stated that the company must not:

“Advertise in certain media or around programmes whose appeal strategy is based on violence, sex, superstition or the incitement of hatred toward anyone. Such strategies are contrary to L’ORÉAL’s Ethical Principles”

The Body Shop revealed to the Huffington Post that their reasoning was that the Mail’s editorial stance were contrary to their values. They said: “We have always supported human rights – it is part of our Enrich Not Exploit Commitment – and when an editorial stance seems to go against that Commitment, we consider seriously whether we will support it.”

The Body Shop, tradionally seen as one of the UK’s premiere ethical companies, was founded by Anita Roddick in 1976. By the turn of the millennium the brand was voted the second most trusted brand in the UK. In 2006 it was sold to L’Oréal. It was revealed this week that they are considering selling the Body Shop for up to €1bn.
