Brothers get moving with Barnardo’s-backed spare stationery campaign

Two brothers have launched a New Year campaign encouraging people in and around north London to hand over their spare stationery so it can be passed on to other children who are less fortunate.

Joseph and Sam Pressinger are collecting up new and used pencils, crayons, pens, rubbers, protractors, rulers and pencil cases with support from Barnardo’s, which from Monday, January 8 will have donation boxes in six stores in Hillingdon, Harrow and Barnet, and the boys’ local branch in Bushey Heath.

Joseph, 12, and Sam, nine, have called the campaign Stationery Moving and throughout January and February they will gather up the donations, test the pens, sharpen used pencils and then work with Barnardo’s to distribute safe, clean and new or re-useable items in sealed pouches to other children who need it during the spring school term.

Dad Marc Pressinger said:  “We’ve always tried to make the boys aware that there are lots of people out there who don’t have a ready supply of clean clothes, food, warmth and basic supplies, and they wanted to do something to help other children who are less fortunate than themselves.

People are responding really well to the campaign – they seem pleased to dig out that pot of blunt pencils that they didn’t want to throw away, or to hand over the set or pens that would otherwise sit unopened at the back of the cupboard. It’s great to have Barnardo’s support, and with the charity’s help we’ll be able to make sure these items are able to reach the children who would really appreciate them.”

Lynn Gradwell, Director of Barnardo’s London, said:  “This is a brilliant idea by Joseph and Sam and we’re so pleased to offer Barnardo’s support. Through the boys’ hard work, many children will benefit from new stationery that they otherwise would not have had, giving them essential tools for school in the year ahead.”

Anyone with spare stationery which they’d like to donate is asked to drop it into one of the six Barnardo’s stores in Green Lane, Northwood; Glengall Road, Edgware; Station Road, Edgware; Love Lane, Pinner; Ruislip High Street or Bushey Heath High Street between January and February 28.
