Charity calls for people to ‘spark joy’ by donating pre-loved clothes during its ‘Big Spring Clean’ initiative

Barnardo’s is calling for people across the UK to take inspiration from tidying sensation Marie Kondo and spring clean their cupboards of any clothes which no longer spark joy.

Marie Kondo’s hit Netflix show ‘Tidying Up With Marie Kondo’ sees the author urging families to only hold onto items which “spark joy” to create more space and organisation in their homes.

As households across the UK embark on their own spring cleans, Barnardo’s is encouraging people to donate any pre-loved clothes to its shops, where they will not only spark joy for other people but also raise money for vulnerable children.

Donating also has a positive effect on the environment, with a Barnardo’s survey finding that Britons could be hoarding more than 640 million items of clothing that they no longer wear*. A study by Fashion Revolution also found extending the life of clothing by a further nine months would reduce carbon, waste and water footprints by around 20-30%**.

Chief Executive of Barnardo’s Javed Khan said: “Donating pre-loved clothes and other items to Barnardo’s helps transform the lives of vulnerable children and young people while tidying your home and helping the environment at the same time.

“It is thanks to the thousands of kind donations to our shops that we are able to continue providing frontline services supporting children, young people, parents and carers across the UK.

“We’d love as many people as possible join in with our Big Spring Clean campaign, and hope the act of donating will ‘spark joy’ as well as breathing new life and organisation into their wardrobes.”

The Spring Clean campaign kicked off on April 9th and runs until the end of May. The children’s charity is urging the public to particularly review last year’s spring and summer wardrobe and are also happy to accept shoes, jewellery, accessorise and homeware as part of the seasonal stock campaign.

While dropping off pre-loved items at their local Barnardo’s store, customers can revamp their wardrobes by browsing the wide range of Spring fashion and unique gems that shops have on offer.
