Compassion in World Farming calls for entrants to its 2020 Marketing and Innovation Awards

Compassion in World Farming is inviting companies from the Food Service and Manufacturing sectors to enter its biennial Marketing and Innovation Awards. The Awards celebrate forward thinking businesses that provide the best examples of work to improve farm animal welfare and to promote higher welfare products.

The Best Innovation Award recognises a company that has developed a successful project or innovation that has delivered measurable benefits to the lives of farm animals.

The Best Marketing Award recognises a company that has delivered a successful, creative and far reaching consumer marketing campaign, communicating the importance of farm animal welfare and promoting products from higher welfare systems.  This year, the Award also covers marketing initiatives that communicate the need to reduce meat, egg and dairy consumption by promoting more plant-based alternatives.

The Marketing & Innovation Awards for the Food Service and Manufacturing sectors are held every two years. In 2018, these forward-thinking companies were recognised:

  • The 2018 Best Innovation Award went to SELEEGT in Germany, for their work in helping to address the issue of killing male chicks in the egg industry, a practice which affects over 5 billion chicks each year.  SELEEGT has developed an endocrinological method for identifying the sex of hatching eggs so that male eggs can be humanely destroyed, before the embryo develops the capacity to feel pain, and are turned into high-quality feed.
  • The 2018 Best Marketing Award was awarded to Dutch manufacturer, Kipster for developing ‘the world’s first carbon neutral egg’.  Their innovative farm has been designed to address animal welfare as well as sustainability concerns, all whilst delivering an affordable product which has resonated well with consumers.

Every other year, companies in the Retail sector are recognised for Innovation and Marketing as part of Compassion’s biennial Supermarket Survey and subsequent ‘Retailer Awards’. The next Retailer Awards will be held in 2021.

Dr Tracey Jones, Director of Food Business at Compassion said: “We’re looking forward to hearing about the exciting and innovative projects companies are involved in. Our winners in 2018 set the bar very high but we know there are outstanding initiatives going on, addressing farm animal welfare issues and solutions, and promoting higher welfare choices and plant-based alternatives. It’s important we recognise this work and encourage others to follow suit in the drive towards a more humane, sustainable food system.”

Deadline for entries is 27 March 2020 and winners will be announced as part of Compassion’s annual Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards ceremony in June 2020.  To download an application form visit: https://www.compassioninfoodbusiness.com/awards/marketing-innovation-awards/ (Entries are accepted following engagement and discussion with one of Compassion’s Food Business Managers.  To contact, either email  foodbusiness@ciwf.org.uk or call 01483 521950.)
