YMCA Fearlessly changing the way we look at masculinity

YMCA Right Here, a project run by YMCA DownsLink Group, is challenging the way we think about masculinity, which is having a growing impact on the mental health of young men.

Earlier this month they hosted Fearless, an interactive exhibition exploring thoughts on male identity, body image, relationships and health.

Over 500 people attended the exhibition at the Whitehawk Football Club in Brighton where there were exhibits from a diverse pool of over two dozen artists, most of whom were young people from the local area.

The football club was chosen as a location as it ties to traditional masculine culture, but also for the values of community spirit and belonging that it shares with the project

Project lead, Jacob Byliss, said: “We couldn’t be happier with the reception we received at the club, and we achieved our aim of starting conversations between people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, about how we can address some of the challenges we face around masculinity and mental health.”

Following the success of the exhibition at the football club, it moved to the Greater Brighton Metropolitan College for a week of events, workshops, and conversations with school and community groups from across the city.
