Lyca Group to raise vital funds and awareness for Alzheimers amongst BAME communities

Lyca Group has pledged to donate £100,000 to Alzheimer’s Research UK to kick-off a year-long charity partnership and to raise awareness of dementia among black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) communities.

Lyca Group is a British multinational corporation delivering high-quality, low-cost products and services, including flagship business Lycamobile, to communities around the world across Telecommunications, Entertainment, Travel, Healthcare, Media, Technology, Financial Services, Marketing and Hospitality.

The initial £100,000 donation will be used to fund groundbreaking dementia research being led from University College London (UCL) and over the next 12 months, employees from across the Lyca Group portfolio of companies will be embarking on fundraising of their own for the cause.

In addition, Lyca Group will also be supporting the charity by raising awareness of dementia within BAME communities to empower and educate them on symptoms and risks. Lyca Group is one of the UK’s most ethnically diverse companies, with over 90 nationalities represented, and research has shown that Alzheimer’s and dementia are often misunderstood by many diaspora communities – making it even more difficult to ensure people have access to an early diagnosis and the best treatment and care. Alzheimer’s Research UK is dedicated to improving understanding of dementia, and the diseases that cause it. As part of this, the charity has been carrying out a programme of work to engage with these communities about dementia, including producing tailored information guides in different languages, such as Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali and Gujarati.

Allirajah Subaskaran, Founder and Chairman of Lyca Group, said of the partnership: “Lyca Group companies were created with the aim of connecting families, friends and communities, wherever they are in the world. However, without proper understanding and effective research, Alzheimer’s and dementia have the potential to tragically disconnect individuals from their loved ones. As a company that reaches diaspora communities across the UK, Lyca Group is committed to supporting the efforts to combat this and is proud to support Alzheimer’s Research UK build awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia amongst the UK’s BAME population, as well as fund research that will benefit future generations.”

Jade Rolph, Corporate Partnerships Account Manager at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “We’re delighted to be joining forces with Lyca Group for what we’re sure will be a valuable partnership. Not only will Lyca Group help us take significant steps forward with dementia research by supporting pioneering work taking place at UCL, the company will be helping us to raise awareness of dementia within BAME communities.

“This is an area of priority to us at Alzheimer’s Research UK and we now have this opportunity to reach even more people. There are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, but there is still a stigma attached to the devastating condition. Anything we can do to break down these taboos, and challenge the misconceptions, is essential if we are to bring about a life-changing treatment for dementia.”
