Kayrros and BNP Paribas join hands to accelerate methane abatement

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas responsible for an estimated one third of global warming to date and projected to cause roughly half of the temperature change of the next 20 years on current trends. Methane has more than 80 times the global warming power of carbon dioxide in the first 20 years. The fossil fuels sector accounts for an estimated 33% of anthropogenic methane emissions. But most of the methane emissions from the sector could be reduced with existing technology as per the IEA’s Methane Tracker 2023. According to…

Google uses satellites, algorithms and AI help map and trace methane sources

Google post about a new partnership with Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) which will help map and trace methane sources. Every year, our planet gets hotter because of greenhouse gas pollution. In fact, 2023 was the hottest year on record, and the last ten years have been the hottest years since 1850. Reducing this warming is essential to decreasing the risk of wildfires, drought and other extreme environmental events, and results in cleaner air and healthier communities. Today, we’re announcing a partnership with Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) that combines our science…

Morrisons trials seaweed animal feed for more climate-friendly cows

Morrisons is working with Queen’s University Belfast on a three-year trial looking at the use of seaweed from the UK in helping to reduce methane production in cattle. The innovative research programme is being led by Professor Sharon Huws and Dr Katerina Theodoridou of the Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS) at the university and is testing indigenous seaweed from the Irish and UK coastlines. The aim is to evaluate the nutritional value of seaweed and assess its potential to reduce methane emissions, improve animal health, and enhance meat and…

Shell announces methane emissions intensity target for oil and gas assets

Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) have announced a target to maintain methane emissions intensity below 0.2% by 2025. This target covers all oil and gas assets for which Shell is the operator. “This methane target complements Shell’s ambition to cut the Net Carbon Footprint of our energy products by around half by 2050, which we announced in November 2017,” said Maarten Wetselaar, Shell’s Integrated Gas & New Energies Director. “It is a further demonstration of our continued focus on tackling greenhouse gas emissions. Such efforts are a critical part of…
