Public donations to UK charities were down £4.4bn in first year of pandemic

UK charities suffered a dramatic drop in donations at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, prompting the sector’s first income decline since 2012, new research shows. The new UK Civil Society Almanac 2023 from the National Council for Voluntary Organisation (NCVO) looks at the financial year 2020/21, which began shortly after the UK’s first national lockdown. The sector’s income for the year dropped by 3% to £56.9bn, of which 46% (£26.4bn) came from public donations. In 2019/20, public donations had been £4.4bn higher. NCVO launches campaign to encourage charities to consider divestment

NCVO has launched a sector-wide campaign encouraging charities across the voluntary sector to think about divesting from fossil fuels. Our campaigns aim Fuelling Positive Change calls on charities to consider moving investments away from businesses involved in the extraction, production, transportation, refining and marketing of fossil fuels. Examples of these are coal, tar sands, oil and gas. The small charities advisory panel has been launched today to champion the voices and experiences of small charities. The panel will ensure this vital part of the voluntary sector can continue to access tailored help, support and advocacy. The creation of the panel was a key part of the agreement to transfer services from the Small Charities Coalition (SCC) when it closed last year.
