How to qualify for a Sustainable Food and Farming Award

Projects submitted for this award should involve livestock production with good animal welfare and already have been implemented into practice or pilot stage on farm.

Projects should demonstrate regenerative farming practices that have positive impacts on seven or more of the following:

Implement measures that have a positive impact on biodiversity:

  • Pollinators
  • Wildlife
  • Wildlife habitats (space for nature and wildlife)
  • Forestry

Promote and assess soil health:

  • Increased soil carbon
  • Reduced tillage
  • Minimizing use of artificial fertilizers through closed-loop fertility (e.g., manure management, nutrient cycle)
  • Minimizing use of chemical pesticides through the use of integrated pest management
  • Use of cover crops & crop rotation

Water:

  • Reduced freshwater use (e.g., drip irrigation, recycling water…)
  • Improved water quality
  • Reduced runoff pollution

Farming practices:

  • Good animal welfare
  • Encourage a diversity of crops and animals
  • Integrated livestock (free-ranging animals fed only on pasture and materials that cannot be eaten by people
  • Minimizing the use of antibiotics
  • Reduce reliance on imported animal feeds
  • Reduce use of human-edible cereals and soy
  • Tailored farming to local agro-climatic conditions
  • Improved farmer livelihoods
  • Improved data collection and data quality for regenerative farming

Please note positive impacts generated in some areas cannot be at the detriment of others.

The criteria assessed include:

  • The novelty of the project and its outcome;
  • The quantifiable positive impact of the project;
  • The potential further impact for farming systems around the world (such as the potential for the project to be adopted more widely), and
  • Whether products resulting from the project have made it through to market.
