Taking action here and now to pave the way for another 80 years
FY23 was another year of global challenges, but also one of progress as IKEA marked its 80th year in business. A reduction in the total IKEA climate footprint, a continued increase in renewable electricity use in retail and production, the introduction of a new bio-based glue and more than halving our climate footprint from product use at home (compared to baseline FY16) are just some of the key movements over the past year.
This latest annual edition of the IKEA Sustainability Report summarises our performance compared to the IKEA sustainability strategy, People & Planet Positive, during FY23. The IKEA Sustainability Report FY23 and the IKEA Climate Report FY23 are issued by Inter IKEA Group and cover the collective efforts from contributors across the entire IKEA franchise system and value chain.
The IKEA climate footprint in FY23 is estimated to be 24.1 million tonnes CO2 eq – a decrease of 12% compared to the previous year and 22% compared to the baseline year FY16. The reduction in FY23 is attributed to the continued increase in renewable electricity use at both retail and production units, energy efficiency improvements in our lighting range, in addition to lower production volumes.
The reporting period follows the financial year 2023, which runs from 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023. Percentages in this report may not total 100% due to rounding differences.
