Back to Ours aims to sprinkle a bit of magic into older people’s lives in Hull. Your support will help us deliver a vibrant programme of ‘Shindigs”, bringing together older/disabled people and carers from the city’s most deprived communities to eat, sing-along and dance to their favourite tunes.

    Situation

We aim to reduce social isolation and inactivity amongst older/disabled people and carers in Hull. Loneliness increases the risk of premature death by up to a quarter and is now thought to be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. An estimated 12.5% of adults in Hull report feeling lonely often or all of the time, particularly over 65s in the city’s most deprived wards, where the problem is compounded by low incomes, food/fuel poverty and high levels of disability/long-term health issues.

    Solution

Our fabulous Shindigs target Hull’s most vulnerable older people, bringing them together for joyous afternoon tea dances and cabarets, featuring professional actors, dancers, singers, musicians! Local volunteers offer refreshments and sparkling conversation. Shindigs make a transformational difference to participants’ physical and emotional well-being, so they feel less lonely and more cared for, reconnecting them to the people and places where they live, restoring a feeling of community.
