About the Scottish Charity Awards

There are many awards ceremonies that recognise our Essential Sector’s value to people in Scotland, and to the planet we live on. SCVO’s Scottish Charity Awards are special because, as Scotland’s national membership body for the voluntary sector, we have a unique footprint and position in the sector.

All our energies go into supporting and showcasing the work of the voluntary sector and we’re passionate about the sector’s achievements and impact. We are dedicated to championing voluntary organisations and supporting your work.

The voluntary sector in Scotland is diverse, vibrant and its work spans many different areas. We want the Scottish Charity Awards to be a celebration of the sector’s vibrancy and diversity and to make sure that as wide a range of organisations and people as possible are represented at the awards.

There are ten award categories at the Scottish Charity Awards. Six recognise the achievements of organisations, and three recognise individuals. The tenth award, People’s Choice, is chosen by a public vote from the finalists in the other nine categories.

We’re very excited to bring you the 2024 Scottish Charity Awards. It’s been another record-breaking year with nearly 500 entries, so arriving at the 39 finalists has been really difficult.

The finalists demonstrate just how essential the voluntary sector is to Scottish society, with dedicated organisations and individuals going above and beyond to make a positive and often life-changing impact in their communities.

Changes to the 2024 Scottish Charity Awards

In 2023, we asked the sector for feedback on how we can make the Scottish Charity Awards more diverse, accessible and inclusive. You gave us lots of really helpful information that we've taken onboard for the 2024 awards.

Some of the things that people told us are:

  • They had concerns about their capacity to complete an application due to team members' time, the knowledge and skills needed to apply and the support available to help
  • They weren't sure if they were eligible to apply and the application process felt onerous
  • They felt the awards were aimed at larger organisations

So this year we've tried to make the awards simpler and more accessible to as many people and organisations as possible. We have:

  • Simplified our application process and are offering you different ways to apply including by submitting a video or audio recording
  • Chosen our award categories to be relevant to a wide range of voluntary organisations small and large across all areas of the country and reflecting the external environment and the nuts and bolts of running an effective voluntary organisation
  • Made the main focus of our awards on the impact you’ve had and the difference that you have made to people and places
  • Made changes to our judging panel to make sure that judges are more representative of the sector, including people from our membership community
  • Introduced drop-in sessions before the awards application deadline to support organisations to apply
