Ofgem has announced the introduction of a new process which gives innovators more opportunities to apply or re-apply to the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) and gain funding quicker than ever before. SIF projects support efforts to end the era of high energy bills, excessive carbon emissions and energy insecurity by accelerating the transition to clean, homegrown energy. The changes, which follow extensive engagement with stakeholders, will make the SIF more flexible and create more opportunities to apply for funding. More than £95 million was announced for ten trailblazing projects through…

Proposed Anglo-Scottish electricity superhighway is first to clear final fast-track funding hurdle
Ofgem’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework is fast-tracking 26 major connection projects which will boost grid capacity and could deliver estimated savings of £1.5 billion. A £3.4 billion funding package has been awarded to build a proposed new subsea and underground 500km cable between Scotland and Yorkshire which could power up to 2million homes. Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) is the first of 26 projects to complete a fast-track process to secure funding through Ofgem’s new ASTI framework. ASTI accelerates the funding process by up to two years, allowing electricity…

The quest for cleaner cheaper power has accelerated this week as Great Britain builds a pathway to a more flexible energy future. Ofgem has: confirmed Elexon as market facilitator for local energy flexibility. Its mission is to spearhead and enable greater flexible energy use across GB’s local electricity distribution networks. It will act as a single, expert entity that will work closely with Ofgem, the ESO (Electricity System Operator), ENA (Energy Networks Association), local networks, and Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs) to drive alignment between local and national flexibility markets and…

Research into state-of-the-art monitoring systems for offshore cables and an initiative to support the decarbonisation of rural areas are among the National Grid-led innovation projects to be funded through the latest stage of Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF). Three projects across National Grid’s electricity transmission and distribution networks have secured almost £400,000 to fund feasibility studies as part of the SIF’s discovery phase, which backs the most promising innovations that could accelerate the net zero transition. National Grid Electricity Transmission (ET) has been awarded £135,000 for one project – HIRE –…

Ofgem is seeking input on how to best attract domestic energy users on a journey to becoming flexible energy consumers able to reap the benefits of a net zero energy system. Recently Ofgem has issued a call for input on how best to engage domestic consumers in Demand Side Response (DSR). This concept enables Great Britain’s rising electricity consumption – resulting from growing numbers of electric vehicles (EVs) and electric heating systems – to better match GB’s increasing number of intermittent renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power. …
