Alcantara celebrates 14 years of serious and certified commitment to Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality

Alcantara, with a pioneering role in sustainability, proudly marks the 14th anniversary of its certified Sustainability Report, reaffirming its commitment to maximum transparency and a fact-based approach to sustainability.

In 2009, Alcantara achieved a milestone by obtaining its Carbon Neutrality certification for the first time. This achievement was a result of the company’s ‘cradle-to-grave’ approach and dedication to compensating for the entire impact in terms of equivalent CO2 emissions through carbon credits deriving from certified and verified offsetting projects.

The concept of ‘Continuity of Commitment,’ prominently featured on the cover of this 14th edition of Alcantara’s Sustainability Report, underscores the steadfastness of Alcantara’s dedication to sustainability and it serves as a guiding principle for the company to forge ahead with unwavering determination. Such concept fosters dialogue with stakeholders, promotes transparency in information sharing, and safeguards the well-being of the broader market and community.

Alcantara firmly believes that creating a responsible business model that generates shared value requires continuous dedication, effective actions, and rigorous analysis of results and statements. That’s why the company places a strong emphasis on transparency, sharing genuine and concrete facts, and staying away from the false declarations.

Since obtaining Carbon Neutrality, Alcantara’s sustainability journey has evolved. The company has strengthened its responsible procurement practices, engaged with stakeholders in meaningful ways, and increasingly embraced the principles of the circular economy. As evidence of this commitment, Alcantara has introduced an innovative range of products partially derived from certified post-consumer recycled polyester. Moreover, the company has accelerated research into end-of-life recycling, partnering with an innovative start-up to develop a pioneering technology that fully recovers the polyester component of Alcantara. The first pilot project has been done at the end of the “Seed Bed” – by Studio Ossidiana, part of the MAXXI BioGrounds – exhibition in Venice, when for the first time Alcantara became a reusable raw material within a complete life cycle, wholly in keeping with the principles of the circular economy.

While acknowledging that carbon offsetting alone is not the ultimate solution to climate change, Alcantara considers carbon credits a valuable tool to speed up the global fight against climate change beyond its value chain. More than 50 projects supported by Alcantara are aimed not only at expanding the use of renewable energy resources but also at delivering tangible social benefit to the territories impacted by the projects supported each year, while offsetting all CO2 emissions produced.

Alcantara’s future steps will include further initiatives to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions, with an active exploration of new technologies and processes to achieve these goals.

Alcantara’s enduring journey towards sustainability stands as evidence of its vision of fostering the protection and well-being of the entire market and community, one conscientious step at a time.

“We wish to underline that sustainability is the most critical issue of our times. That’s why it is a core value deeply rooted in our corporate culture and an important growth driver of our business strategy development. Sustainability is a purpose that should be embraced on a global scale: there is no other way”, declares Andrea Boragno, Chairman of Alcantara S.p.A.
