Challenging MND Team Set To Reclaim Thames Pedalo Guinness World Record In Non-Stop Attempt

The Challenging MND Team will once again attempt to break the Guinness World Record for travelling the Thames fastest in a pedalo.

Led by Alex Gibson, a GB decathlete and diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease four years ago, the attempt will begin on the 16th June.  The team aim to travel the 128 mile distance of the Thames non-stop. On this latest attempt, the team hope to beat not just the record, but the amount of money raised. The team joining Alex will once again be ex-England Rugby Union player Andy Long; Alun Thomas; and Joe Reed.

Last August, Alex and the Challenging MND team made history by smashing the previous Guinness World Record and travelling from Lechlade to Teddington Lock in in 2 days, 15 hours and 2 minutes – one day and 21 hours and 47 minutes quicker than the previous record.  In total, the team raised over £20,000 for Challenging MND, a charity founded by Alex, which aims to help those living with Motor Neurone Disease complete challenges and fulfil dreams to create lasting memories.

Alex Gibson, Challenging MND founder and living with MND himself said: “This is once again going to be a massive challenge. Our record was beaten three weeks after we smashed the last one, so this time we are aiming to put the record out of sight by going non-stop throughout the night, completing the route in less than 48 hours. We have a great support team and it’s going to take every ounce of effort for us to go non-stop.”

Alex aged 43, founded Challenging MND following his own diagnosis. Throughout his life Alex has had a huge interest in sport and fitness, representing Great Britain in the decathlon and playing rugby for Barking; Brentwood; and Loughborough University.  So far Alex has raised over £220,000 for charity.
