CIPR 2023 Annual Report – Showcasing the value of responsible communication to society

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) has published its 2023 Annual Report reflecting on a busy year of activity in celebration of its 75th anniversary. ‘Showcasing the Value of Responsible Communication to Society‘ highlights a year of “mixed results” as the Institute’s anniversary celebrations and increased activity and advocacy work resulted in a loss of just over £200,000 despite an increase in income and membership.

The report includes the CIPR’s second annual ESG report detailing its certified carbon-neutral status, its achievement in becoming the first professional body to achieve the National Equality Standard, and the launch of the Iprovision 75 Fund, which supports PR practitioners from lower socio-economic backgrounds. It outlines the Institute’s growth with membership going over 11,000 and 153 practitioners achieving Chartered status – a record for a single year. Published in an accessible and interactive online format, the report explores the CIPR’s work across the year in line with its five-year strategy with details on its Lobbying for Good Lobbying campaign, new ESG and EDI guides, AI in PR research, and more.

Members will have the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of the current, past, and future CIPR Presidents as well as the Institute’s CEO at the CIPR’s AGM on Wednesday, July 10. They will be joined by guest speaker, author, and columnist Caitlin Moran. Register online to attend.

2023 was a landmark year for the CIPR as we celebrated our 75th anniversary and continued to champion the value of responsible communication to society. This report highlights our unwavering commitment to advancing professional standards and driving change within the industry. We grew membership and saw more members completing CPD than ever before. For me, achieving the National Equality Standard after months of hard work is still my proudest moment and ensures the Institute is on a firm foundation for years to come.

This work comes at a cost and our finances show it has been a year of mixed results with the significant financial loss we made. We have put measures into place to ensure that isn’t repeated and explained more about that in the report that I hope people take the time to read. I would like to thank all our staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the CIPR remains at the forefront of the evolving public relations landscape.
Alastair McCapra, CIPR Chief Executive
