Climate Footprint Project launches toolbox to support governments with emissions tracking and monitoring

The Climate Footprint Project, an initative of the Under2 Coalition, has launched a new resource to support state and regional governments in improving their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions tracking and reduction efforts.

State and regional governments are at the frontline of cutting emissions to meet regional, national and international climate targets. But, to meet these targets, they must be equipped to measure and record their emissions. And this can be done through regional GHG inventories.

Without a GHG inventory, governments don’t have a full picture of where emissions are coming from and don’t know where to enact policies to reduce them. They’re also left in the dark on the progress and impact of the actions that they are implementing.

The toolbox, which was developed alongside a team of experts at Ricardo Energy & Environment, is designed to allow state and regional governments to easily provide their environmental or climate change teams with a variety of resources on how to compile an economy-wide GHG inventory for their jurisdiction. It includes a series of ‘how to’ videos alongside a set of templates to document the GHG inventory compilation process.

While the resources provide valuable information on how to compile a GHG inventory for the first time and make improvements over time, they also generally support GHG inventory compilers in carrying out their work more efficiently.

For states and regions that already have a GHG inventory in place, further resources are available to support the identification and tracking of climate mitigation actions.

The Climate Footprint Project, which launched in September 2018 and is due to conclude later this year, has been working directly with the governments of Pernambuco (Brazil), Chhattisgarh and West Bengal (India), Baja California, Jalisco and Yucatán (Mexico), and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and delivering technical training and capacity building.

Now in its final phase, alongside running peer learning forums and launching an e-learning course, the development of the toolkit aids the project’s goals of knowledge sharing with the wider Under2 Coalition of states and regions.
