FareShare backs plan to end need for food banks in Scotland

The Scottish Government recently committed to a new action plan to end the need for food banks. Cash First: Towards Ending the Need for Food Banks in Scotland outlines targeted steps including providing funding to organisations that help tackle food insecurity in Scotland including FareShare.

Jon Molyneux, Scottish Affairs Lead at FareShare said:

“FareShare welcomes the Scottish Government’s commitment to ending the need for food banks. This new plan will help to ensure that local and national organisations all over Scotland work together to both respond to and help prevent food insecurity in the first place.

This plan recognises the important role that FareShare and other community food organisations play in supporting people’s wider wellbeing, as well as being a vital route through which cash first responses can be promoted. We believe in using our surplus food to help strengthen communities and tackle the root causes of poverty.

The plan is also right to highlight the financial drivers, particularly during the cost of living crisis, that force people towards food banks. This shows the need for longer-term action to boost people’s incomes and cut their living costs. We look forward to supporting this important work which is grounded in human rights and dignity.”
