Fieldfisher partners with Young Citizens to champion active citizenship through The Big Democracy Lesson

European law firm Fieldfisher has partnered with Young Citizens to support the launch of The Big Democracy Lesson, a free national programme that provides students with the tools to understand how the rule of law and democracy work and why it matters.

The initiative comes as major changes to democratic participation take shape, including votes at 16 and mandatory citizenship education in primary schools by 2028. The Big Democracy Lesson brings these goals forward to 2026, providing resources from primary age through Year 13. The programme launched at the International Dispute Resolution Centre with a panel discussion featuring young people, former Downing Street advisor Alastair Campbell, and the Attorney General, Lord Hermer KC. The event highlighted the urgent need for civic and media literacy to counter misinformation and polarisation.

Millie Hawes, Head of Just Purpose at Fieldfisher, said:

“One of our community impact pillars at Fieldfisher is promoting the rights of children and young people – a focus area that resonates with many. Partnering with Young Citizens is a natural fit because not only does their work directly address the democratic confidence gap, it also ensures young people have the skills and knowledge to participate meaningfully in society. This is about supporting the next generation through education and empowerment.”

Ashley Hodges, Chief Executive of Young Citizens, commented:

“Votes at 16 is a milestone, but a vote only matters if young people feel confident using it. Democratic participation begins years earlier, with understanding power, practising debate, and knowing how to find reliable information in a world of misinformation. To make this vision a reality, we need committed partners like Fieldfisher that recognise the importance of civic education and are willing to invest in the next generation.”

Building on the success of The Big Legal Lesson, which has reached over half a million young people since 2019, this new programme provides ready-to-use lessons and activities to foster critical thinking and key civic skills that empower young people to use their voice in democracy (or our society).

A young participant shared:

“I think it’s very important that young people engage politically as they are our future decision makers. By engaging young people now, they can help shape policies and it enables our voices to be heard.”
