HITRECORD and the ACLU to Collaborate on a Know Your Rights Voter Education Campaign

HITRECORD, the creative collaboration platform founded by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jared Geller, is collaborating with the American Civil Liberties Union on a Know Your Rights public awareness campaign to educate voters on their voting rights leading up to the presidential election on November 3, 2020. The campaign will also share with participants and followers the ACLU’s new vote by mail education tool: aclu.org/voter.

HITRECORD is inviting their community of over 950,000 artists globally to collaborate on a series of social assets and videos that will highlight the voting rights of marginalized groups and people facing barriers to voting. The campaign will launch with content focusing on the rights of voters with disabilities and segue into a number of other topics, including being a first-time voter and being at the poll site on election day.

HITRECORD and the ACLU will provide a list of facts, tips, and individual rights around each of these issues and scenarios, stemming from the ACLU’s Know Your Rights materials. The Know Your Rights campaign aims to educate all people on their fundamental right to vote, guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution; how to exercise their power; and what to do if their rights are violated. The general public and content creators everywhere are invited to bring those rights to life with illustrations, audio recordings, and on-camera contributions. They are also encouraging those with personal experience surrounding these issues to share their stories.

“This is the most important election of our lifetimes. It’s more important than ever that people know their voting rights,” said Dale Ho, director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project. “The ACLU’s Voting Rights Project has been fighting to uphold the right to vote for years, and we are glad this collaboration with HITRECORD can help fuel this mission.”

“I can’t tell you how proud and excited I am for HITRECORD to be collaborating with the ACLU again, this time with a project educating the public about voting rights.” said Joseph Gordon-Levitt, co-founder of HITRECORD. “With the upcoming presidential election, it’s critical — especially during this particular election cycle which is rife with misinformation — that everyone knows their constitutional rights. Information regarding voting rights is especially important to individuals from marginalized communities, where voting disenfranchisement happens disproportionately. Combining the legal and professional expertise of the ACLU with the storytelling, creativity, and every-day experiences of the HITRECORD community will no doubt create an awesome occasion to educate the masses about voting rights in a positive and informative way. I look forward to seeing what we create together!”

HITRECORD previously teamed up with the ACLU in 2016 on a five-part educational series on the topics of technology and democracy. While preparing for his role as Edward Snowden in the Oliver Stone film “Snowden,” Gordon-Levitt became passionate about issues of mass surveillance and digital privacy. HITRECORD asked the public to submit videos answering the question: “Is today’s technology good or bad for democracy?” The goal of the project was not to gather expert opinions or talking points, but instead to hear personal stories from people all over the world. Keeping with the style of HITRECORD productions, each documentary was edited with music and interactive DIY animations. One of the installments, “Are You There, Democracy? It’s Me, the Internet,” was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Original Interactive Program in 2017.
