Jude’s Publishes its 2023 Impact Report and Highlights a 21% Reduction in Carbon Intensity

Jude’s, the British ice cream company dedicated to making delicious ice cream with the smallest footprint on the planet, is delighted to share the results of its annual Impact Report which highlights the steps the company has taken to ensure its low impact on both people and the planet. The insightful report from the B Corporation also shares the inside scoop on Jude’s carbon-cutting strategies in 2022.

Report highlights include:

  • 21% reduction in carbon intensity per litre of ice cream vs. the 2020 baseline, which is halfway to the company’s ambitious target of a 43% reduction by 2030

  • The UK’s first walk-in ice cream freezer powered by solar panels

  • NEW solar panels on the Twyford ice cream factory roof

  • 100% of virgin paper and board is from certified renewable sources

To create this report, Jude’s has continued to work with leading carbon footprinting expert, Professor Mike Berners-Lee and his team at Small World Consulting. Since 2020, the team has rigorously measured Jude’s scope 1, 2 and 3 (upstream) carbon emissions, and advised on carbon cutting and carbon removal actions the company can take.

The report unveils new research which shows that plant based ice cream uses, on average, 80% less land than dairy to produce. This offers significant advantages and opportunities for biodiversity and habitat protection. Plant based ice cream also has, on average, a 47% lower carbon footprint than dairy. As a business Jude’s has committed to making half its products vegan by 2025, currently 36% of the range is plant based with 75% of product launches being plant based in 2022.

Chow Mezger, Jude’s MD, comments: “We are delighted to see the continued impact of the many carbon-cutting measures we have taken across the business.  A 21% reduction in carbon intensity per litre of ice cream is the result of the hard work of our whole team, and we’re encouraged to see the positive impact of growing our plant based ranges and investing in solar energy.

It’s fantastic to understand better the lower impact of plant based ice cream on the land.  Small World’s calculation that plant based ice cream uses 80% less land used to make dairy ice cream is very encouraging and significant for protecting biodiversity and habitats globally.”

Professor Mike Berners-Lee comments, “Jude’s continues to make great strides forward in sustainability. The rise of their delicious plant based ice cream which places 80% less demand on the land and has only around half the greenhouse gas emissions compared to their dairy ice cream sets an example to the world by tasting at least as good. Jude’s drive to be friendly to people and the planet goes much further than carbon-cutting. Just as important is the attention they give to the wider environmental agenda as well as social justice in this country and beyond.”

As a B Corp Jude’s is committed to using business as a force for good. In the last year, the company has donated over 66,000 portions to charities and NHS heroes, paid a Living Wage to all employees and supported Ukrainian refugees in partnership with the Sanctuary Foundation.
