On the 10-year anniversary of the UK Climate Change Act, the CLG celebrates the UK’s achievements towards a zero carbon economy and calls for clear guidelines from government to catalyse future progress. In a letter signed by CEOs from Anglian Water, Coca-Cola European Partners, Danone, IAG, Interface, Scottish Power, Signify UK & Ireland, SSE, Thames Water Utilities Ltd and Unilever, the CLG demands clear targets set by governments to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. The letter highlights the importance of:
- The government setting clear long-term goals so businesses can work to deliver higher ambition and plan for long-term success.
- Making a smooth and managed transition over time in order to mitigate the risks of disruption to business operations.
- The UK setting the direction of travel for businesses, giving clarity to planning, and decreasing exposure to climate risks, whilst allowing us to grasp the tremendous economic opportunities that this transition presents.
- Setting climate targets in line with the latest science to show commitment to a safe, prosperous future for all and unlock innovation and collaboration that can bring down the costs of action, and ensure the UK retains its role as a leader on climate change and secures a place as a hub for the industries of the future.
