New CIPR Diversity and Inclusion Network guide on Inclusive Language

A new guide from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations’ (CIPR) Diversity and Inclusion Network was released recently, exploring the relationship between language, inclusion, and identity.

Published ahead of Global Accessibility Awareness Day last month on Thursday 18 May, Inclusive Language – the second in a five-part series of guides – is designed to improve understanding across the public relations profession of the importance of inclusion in the language practitioners use.

The CIPR’s Diversity and Inclusion Network published a guide to EDI Basics in March and will publish the following resources throughout 2023;

  • Inclusive Communications (June 2023)
  • Inclusive Events (September 2023)
  • Advocacy and Allyship (December 2023)

The guides have been written by Sara Thornhurst Chart.PR, MCIPR and Vickie Cox MCIPR with input from Avril Lee MCIPR and Cornelius Alexander Dip CIPR, FCIPR, Found. Chart. PR.

As professional communicators, we understand better than most that words have the power to shape attitudes, perceptions and actions. Understanding and considering the importance of inclusivity in the language we use unlocks the full potential of our communication and allows us to engage with a wider audience.

This valuable resource will support PR professionals and those responsible for any level of communication, internally or externally, to do that. Once again, many thanks to Sara Hawthorn and Vickie Cox for their time and expertise in putting these guides together.
Avril Lee MCIPR, Chair of the CIPR Diversity and Inclusion Network
