Orizon achieves unprecedented carbon credit rating in the sector

Orizon, Latin America’s largest waste management company, has achieved an unprecedented milestone: the carbon credits generated at its Maceió (Alagoas state) and Sergipe (Sergipe state) Ecoparks have received an AA Rating from Sylvera, one of the world’s most rigorous carbon credit rating agencies. With this achievement, the two facilities become the only landfill-based carbon credit projects operated by Orizon worldwide to receive an AA rating from the institution.

Out of 547 projects assessed globally by Sylvera across all existing carbon credit methodologies, including projects based on other sources, only nine initiatives (1.6%) have been awarded an AA Rating by Sylvera. “The rating demonstrates the reliability and traceability of the credits generated from the landfills operated by the group,” says Paulo Laguardia, Orizon’s Environmental Operations Superintendent.

Top marks

The rating, which has strong visibility in the European market, follows an extensive independent assessment. Sylvera’s assessment awarded the Maceió and Sergipe Ecoparks the highest possible scores across four key criteria: Additionality, demonstrating that carbon revenue is a key driver enabling the projects to operate; Permanence, with zero risk of operational interruption; Carbon Accounting, focused on the accuracy of real-time data on avoided methane emissions; and Safeguards and Co-benefits, which assess social impact, job creation and the development of surrounding communities.

Opportunities in the global market

The international carbon credit market is becoming increasingly demanding when it comes to the reliability and traceability of these assets. There is growing demand for high-integrity credits, including those that have undergone rigorous assessments and received high ratings, providing global investors and regulators with greater assurance that the claimed environmental impact is actually being delivered.

The rating gives Orizon a strategically stronger commercial position in its ongoing carbon credit negotiations. In total, Orizon transferred 735,700 carbon credits during the first half of 2026, highlighting strong demand from major global corporations for high-integrity assets backed by verified audits.

Partnership with Google

A pioneering carbon credit commercialization agreement signed by Orizon and Google is helping finance the construction of a new biogas plant at the company’s Cuiabá (MT) Ecopark, with construction beginning in the first half of August 2026. The project introduces a progressive price-escalation model for the long-term supply of carbon credits. The structure will prevent the release of polluting gases and help accelerate decarbonization targets for technology assets.
