Record Number of Companies Participate in Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Brazilian LGBTQIA+ Workplace Equality Index; Impacts More Than 850,000 Employees

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s ‘HRC Equidade BR: Global Workplace Equality Program’ is the leading benchmarking survey and report recognizing employers in Brazil that have demonstrated a commitment to LGBTQIA+ equality by adopting crucial LGBTQIA+-inclusive policies and practices for their employees. Created in partnership with Instituto Mais Diversidade and the Forum de Empresas e Direitos LGBTI+, the third annual report names 79 organizations that earned the maximum score and were recognized with the 2024 HRC Foundation designation of “Best Places to Work for LGBTQIA+ People,” or in Brazil, “Melhores Empresas Para Pessoas LGBTQIA+ Trabalharem.” Participation also increased from 91 employers last year to 124 in 2024. The HRC Foundation’s work in Brazil impacts more than 850,000 employees working for inclusive organizations nationwide.

Some key highlights from this year’s report include:

  • 94% of participating companies affirmed implementing non-discrimination policies that explicitly include sexual orientation.

  • 90% responded to implementing a formalized Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) policy.

  • Many of the participating companies extended their D&I policies to include suppliers, with 67% of certified companies indicating they had a structured process and policies around supplier diversity.

  • 94% of companies said they offer equal healthcare coverage for their transgender employees as non-transgender employees, without exclusion for necessary medical care—this percentage jumps to 96% among certified companies.

  • 88% of participating companies made at least one public commitment to promote or share LGBTQIA+ initiatives.

In order to create safe, affirming, inclusive workplaces for LGBTQIA+ employees, there needs to be full engagement and commitment to equality from Brazilian national and multinational companies. That’s exactly what we’re seeing. In its third year, the Equidade BR program has exhibited an impressive 36% increase in participation and a 39% increase in companies that scored 100 on the survey. This year’s results mean countless employees are impacted by the meaningful actions of participating companies, knowing that inclusive workplaces lead to happier, more fulfilled lives. These efforts continue to be important in the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond — our thanks to all who support and participate in embracing safe and equitable workspaces.”

RaShawn “Shawnie” Hawkins, SHRM-CP, Senior Director of the HRC Foundation’s Workplace Equality Program

We are very impressed with the results of the 3rd edition of HRC Equidade BR. Certified companies are demonstrating that corporate Diversity and Inclusion strategies have evolved over the years and are now benefiting not only the employees of these organizations but also the LGBTQIA+ people who work within their value chains”, said João Torres, Implementing Partner at HRC Equidade BR and Executive President of Instituto + Diversidade. “This is reflected in the survey, with 70% of certified companies having processes and policies structured around supplier diversity.”

Through its CEI and partnerships with local organizations, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation is advancing LGBTQIA+ workplace inclusion and equality across the U.S., Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil, impacting over 23 million employees worldwide. The 2024 HRC Equidade BR report evaluated Brazilian businesses and corporations based on five core pillars of LGBTQIA+ workplace inclusion:

  • Adoption of nondiscrimination policies;

  • Creation of employee resource groups or diversity and inclusion councils;

  • LGBTQIA+ training and education;

  • Engagement in public activities to support LGBTQIA+ inclusion.
