The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has released the first draft of its Power Sector Net-Zero Standard for public consultation, open until November 3, 2025.
With the sector responsible for nearly 40% of global energy-related emissions –and increasingly exposed to climate risks, resulting in threats to critical infrastructure and generation capacity– rapid decarbonization is both urgent and strategic. At the same time, the sector’s role as an enabler of decarbonization across other industries positions it for long-term growth in a carbon-constrained economy.
The draft Power Standard is designed to enable companies across the power sector to set near- and long-term science-based targets that are practical, credible and aligned with what is needed to reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest. It will help manage transition risks and capture growth opportunities as global demand for low-emission electricity accelerates.
Developed in alignment with the first consultation draft of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2, the draft Power Standard aims to drive consistency and clarity across the SBTi’s suite of Standards.
The draft Power Standard is intended for companies involved in power generation, transmission and distribution, storage, trade, and retail activities. It builds on, and will replace the SBTi’s Quick Start Guide for Electric Utilities, offering updated sector-specific criteria designed to address the unique emissions and operations of companies across the sector.
The SBTi invites feedback from all stakeholders to help shape a Standard that is practical for businesses, scientifically robust, and credible–helping accelerate climate action in line with net-zero goals.
The public consultation is open until November 3, 2025. Feedback can be submitted through the consultation survey.
More information, including details on the consultation process and project plan, is available in the Power Sector Standard Terms of Reference and the sector webpage.
