Analysis published in a new report has shown that transport decarbonisation could result in a multi-billion pound boost to local economies across the country, but says action from the Government is needed. The Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) and Hitachi Energy’s report – ‘Decarbonising Transport: Enabling local energy solutions’ – is an analysis of the energy requirements to deliver Net Zero transport systems in local areas across the UK. The report uses Southampton and the Solent as a case study as it is one of few that…

Airbus and Kansai Airports partner to study the use of hydrogen in the decarbonisation of the aviation sector in Japan
Airbus and Kansai Airports have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the use of hydrogen at three of the Group’s airports in Japan (Kansai International Airport, Osaka International Airport, and Kobe Airport). Through this partnership, Airbus and Kansai Airports will jointly prepare a roadmap to address challenges and define an advocacy plan for hydrogen needs. Both parties would lead the study into the development of infrastructure for the use of hydrogen in the aviation sector. Each partner will leverage their complementary expertise to help define the potential opportunities…
Read MoreNew Report: Carbon removals needed as well as rapid decarbonisation to limit global warming to 1.5°C
In its latest report, Mind the Gap: How Carbon Dioxide Removals Must Complement Deep Decarbonisation to Keep 1.5°C Alive, the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC), describes how carbon dioxide removals (CDR) alongside rapid and deep global decarbonisation can give the world a 50/50 chance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The report confirms that all sectors of the economy can and must decarbonise by mid-century with big emission reductions in the 2020s. Cutting coal use by half and ending 70% of deforestation by 2030 are particularly important priorities. But even given…

Rolls-Royce is teaming up with Porterbrook to identify and develop technological innovations to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality across the rail network. The two companies, who have signed a memorandum of understanding, will investigate the potential for the use of synthetic and net zero fuels, including hydrogen, both in fuel cells and internal combustion engines. Building on their recent success of jointly introducing hybrid battery-diesel railcars into passenger service, the two companies will also explore the potential for advanced hybridisation. The relationship also includes considering the role of…
