The UK’s hydrogen industry has issued an urgent call for coordinated cross-ministerial intervention to prevent further damaging delays to the Government’s Hydrogen Allocation Rounds and the long-awaited Hydrogen Strategy refresh. In a joint letter sent to the Secretaries of State and the Chancellor, the Hydrogen Energy Association (HEA), on behalf of the sector, warns that continued uncertainty is already eroding business confidence, stalling investment decisions and putting high-value UK jobs at risk. The HEA is calling for the immediate publication of HAR 2 project outcomes, the HAR 3 market engagement…

Brigg Breakthrough: Hydrogen Blending Powers Up UK’s Net Zero Ambitions
Centrica and National Gas have successfully completed a landmark trial, marking the first time hydrogen has been blended into the National Transmission System (NTS). The trial took place last week [on 9 October] and involved National Gas injecting a 2% blend of green hydrogen into the gas grid, before being blended with natural gas to generate power at Centrica’s Brigg Power Station – producing electricity directly into the power grid. This ‘real life’ UK first test shows the end-to-end potential of Hydrogen to decarbonise critical energy infrastructure. This key milestone…

In a first of its kind for the UK, the trial, delivered by a partnership of Exeter Airport, TUI, Cranfield University, ULEMCo, MULAG and Boeing and supported by the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s Hydrogen Challenge programme, saw a TUI Boeing 737 passenger aircraft undergo a turnaround using ground support equipment powered by green hydrogen. The live demonstration involved a hydrogen-powered baggage tug, pushback tug and ground power unit. It is the first time in the UK – and possibly the world – that multiple pieces of hydrogen-powered equipment have been…

DP World has successfully completed initial testing of its hydrogen fuel cell rubber-tired gantry (RTG) crane at the Port of Vancouver, marking a significant milestone in decarbonizing its port operations. The RTG is now undergoing field testing as the company assesses the feasibility of electrifying its global fleet of 1,500 RTG cranes. Traditionally powered by diesel, RTG cranes are essential for cargo handling but are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. At DP World’s Vancouver terminal, 19 RTG cranes account for 50% of diesel consumption and generate over 4,200 tonnes…
