Virent Bio-Based Fuel Used in Third Milestone Demonstration Flight Powered With 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Virent’s plant-based synthesized aromatic kerosene recently helped power an Emirates Airline demonstration flight, the first in the Middle East and North Africa to use 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in one engine and traditional jet fuel in the other. Virent, a Marathon Petroleum Corp. subsidiary, used its BioForming® process to produce the synthesized aromatic kerosene (SAK), a critical component that made the 100% SAF possible. “Virent’s technology converts widely available, plant-based sugars into the compounds that make it possible to fuel a jet engine without the need to blend SAF…

Virgin Atlantic to purchase 70m US gallons of sustainable aviation fuel

Virgin Atlantic has announced the purchase of 10m USG per annum of SAF to be produced by Gevo, Inc. and supplied by Virgin Atlantic’s joint venture partner, Delta Air Lines. The agreement with Delta builds on the existing long-term partnership between Delta and Gevo and increases the use of SAF from the US West Coast.  SAF produced by Gevo will come from one of its future production facilities. Gevo’s production process separates sugars and proteins from non-edible industrial corn grown using climate smart agricultural practices. The sugars are then used…

Sustainable Aviation Fuel reduces Airbus’ Scope 1 emissions

Airbus is reducing its CO2 footprint with Sustainable Aviation Fuels. Today, reduced carbon fuel is being increasingly used on Airbus sites and activities where a direct impact on carbon emissions can be made. In line with its purpose to pioneer sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world, Airbus is working to reduce the environmental footprint of its products and services. This includes efforts implemented in Airbus’ own manufacturing operations and facilities, the source of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions. Airbus has the ambition to reduce its Scope 1 &…

First helicopter flight powered solely by sustainable aviation fuel

An Airbus H225 has performed the first ever helicopter flight with 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) powering both Safran’s Makila 2 engines. This flight, which follows the flight of an H225 with one SAF-powered Makila 2 engine in November 2021, is part of the flight campaign aimed at understanding the impact of SAF use on the helicopter’s systems. Tests are expected to continue on other types of helicopters with different fuel and engine architectures with a view to certify the use of 100% SAF by 2030. “This flight with SAF…

Kuehne + Nagel Partners With IAG Cargo To Reduce Its Supply Chain Emissions Through Use Of 8 Million Litres Of First UK Produced Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Kuehne+Nagel to reduce emissions by purchasing eight million litres of sustainable aviation fuel. The delivery will be over 2022 and will remove approximately 18,300 tonnes of CO2, which is the equivalent of 150 British Airways flights between London and New York. The SAF, manufactured from sustainable waste feedstocks, will be sourced from Phillips 66 Limited’s Humber Refinery in Lincolnshire, England – the first to produce SAF at scale in the UK. IAG was the first European airline group to commit to 10% of its fuel to be SAF by 2030.…
