Algae cultivation is now heating up to 2,500 apartments in Gustavsberg, Sweden

Excess heat from AstaReal’s algae cultivation is now being used for district heating for up to 2,500 apartments in Gustavsberg, outside of Stockholm. Vattenfall’s innovative installation uses waste heat from AstaReal’s production process, that would otherwise be lost. “AstaReal’s production process is energy-intensive and requires both electricity and cooling. The excess heat is now being used for heating homes and premises, and Gustavsberg’s residents now get more than 20 per cent of their heating needs from the new technology,” says Kurosh Beradari, Sales and Marketing Director at Vattenfall Heat in…

Dutch project to combine solar and farming

In the Netherlands Vattenfall is constructing a solar park where solar panels are combined with cultivation. The aim of the so-called Symbizon project is to show that farming and solar panels can go well together. In densely populated Netherlands land use is a hot issue. The Symbizon agri-PV project in Almere just outside Amsterdam aims to find new ways to combine solar power production and agriculture. Construction started in the summer and will be completed in the autumn. The strips between the solar panels will then be prepared for sowing…

Vattenfall and CAKE reveal hidden CO2 sources when producing an electric motorcycle

Vattenfall and CAKE have announced an innovative initiative to visualize carbon emissions from production. Within the joint project Cleanest Dirt Bike Ever, CAKE and Vattenfall are revealing the climate impact of producing one CAKE Kalk OR electric offroader by placing it in a cube, 8.6 meters tall, that represents the volume of carbon emissions – 637 cubic meters, equal to 1,186 kg of carbon dioxide. “Fossil-free vehicles means that the entire production part needs to be decarbonized, regardless of the fuel they are running on. In fact, far from every…
