Alzheimer’s Research UK announces partnership with Garmin to empower people to reduce their dementia risk

The UK’s leading dementia research charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK, today launches a three-year partnership with Garmin International, Inc, to raise awareness of risk reduction and raise vital funds for groundbreaking research.

As the charity’s official sporting events partner, Garmin will encourage people to help reduce their risk of developing dementia through consistent cardiovascular exercise, no matter their age or fitness level. The use of Garmin smartwatches is an effective means to track progress, stay motivated and promote personal accountability in pursuit of individual goals.

Lucy Squance, Director of Supporter Led Fundraising at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:

“We’re incredibly excited to be collaborating with Garmin. Dementia has a devastating impact on so many lives, but research can keep people connected to their families, their lives and themselves for longer. This partnership gives us an exceptional opportunity to reach out to the public and offer them the support and advice they need to make positive lifestyle changes that could lower their chances of developing dementia. We can’t wait to see what we achieve together.”

Garmin became the official sponsor of Alzheimer’s Research UK’s new virtual fundraising challenge, The Treble, which launched on 1 April. The event will encourage people to take on running, cycling and swimming challenges while raising funds for groundbreaking dementia research.

Theo Axford, Head of Marketing at Garmin UK, said: “We’re really thrilled to announce our partnership with Alzheimer’s Research UK. Together we are determined to make a difference. We want to empower people to make simple lifestyle changes in order to help protect their health and reduce their dementia risk. We’re looking forward to supporting all of Alzheimer’s Research UK’s sporting events and activities and want to encourage as many people as possible to take part.”

Garmin and Alzheimer’s Research UK will work together to raise awareness of the benefits of consistent cardiovascular activity in reducing dementia risk. Here are some fast facts:

  • Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia
  • Almost one million people in the UK are living with the condition and 50 million people worldwide.  For each of them, their families and their friends the impact is huge.
  • Despite this, only 34 percent of the public believe it’s possible to reduce their risk of developing dementia.
  • Together, Alzheimer’s Research UK and Garmin aim to increase awareness of the steps people can take to help reduce dementia risk.
  • Research suggests that the number of people with dementia could be reduced by up to one-third through lifestyle changes such as eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping physically and mentally active.
