Taking inspiration from President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot which united millions of people around an organising goal to put man on the moon, The Earthshot Prize aims to incentivise change and help repair the planet by identifying evidence-based solutions to the world’s biggest environmental problems. Every year for the next ten years, five one million-pound prizes will be awarded to those who make the most progress towards achieving the five ‘Earthshots’.
The BBC will air a major five-part series – Earthshot: How To Save Our Planet (w/t) – ahead of the first awards ceremony in London in Autumn 2021. The series will feature Prince William and some of our most eminent scientists, foremost wildlife experts and environmentalists. It will focus on the five ‘Earthshots’ – simple but ambitious goals to repair our planet:
1) Protect and restore nature
2) Clean our air
3) Revive our oceans
4) Build a waste free world
5) Fix our climate
Crucially, the series won’t just explore environmental hazards. It will investigate solutions which can be implemented to avert environmental problems, and practical projects that can be rolled out across the world.
Developed and produced by renowned natural history filmmakers Silverback Films, Earthshot: How To Save Our Planet will be the primer and energiser that all human beings need right now: a landmark series showing us exactly how our unique world can be brought back from the brink.
In addition, the BBC will broadcast the inaugural Earthshot Prize awards ceremony which will take place in London in Autumn 2021.

Earthshot: How To Save Our Planet (w/t), a 5×60’ series, will be made by Silverback Films. The Executive Producers are Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey and the Series Producer is Jonnie Hughes. It was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, BBC Chief Content Officer and Jack Bootle, Head of Commissioning, Science and Natural History. It will tx in 2021.
Earthshot: How to Save Our Planet (w/t) is part of the BBC’s ongoing commitment to programmes which explore the environment and the challenges facing the natural world.
