Harry Potter star Bonnie Wright says becoming a mum “the most wonderful adventure so far” in new film for WaterAid

Actor, activist and author Bonnie Wright has spoken about her ‘positive birth experience’ in a new film released today as part of WaterAid’s ’12 ways of water’ series, highlighting the positive ways clean water changes lives.

One in five health centres globally do not have clean water on site putting millions of women and babies at risk of deadly diseases. In a video posted on her Instagram in collaboration with international charity WaterAid, the Harry Potter star says “where there’s water, there’s healthy babies”, before reminiscing about the biggest adventures of her life for far – becoming a mum.

Bonnie is joined by several celebrities including Kiss FM DJ Tyler West, TV presenter Dr Ranj and comedian Jenny Éclair, who have each chosen a way water changes lives to highlight in their films, from healthy babies to laughter to opportunities.

Bonnie said:

“From playing Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter films to trawling for plastics in the Gulf Stream, I’ve had my fair share of adventures, but the most wonderful adventure so far has been becoming a mum.”

The actress welcomed her first child, a baby boy named Elio, with husband Andrew Lococo in September 2023, after giving birth at home.

She continued:

“I’m so grateful to have had such a positive birth experience; the birth team that brought Elio, my son into this world were just amazing.”

But Bonnie is fully aware her calm and safe experience of childbirth isn’t shared by millions of women around the world saying she “couldn’t imagine how stressful” it would be to give birth without clean water.

More than a million deaths every year are caused by infections from unclean births – a key reason to why Bonnie is supporting WaterAid this winter.

Nearly one in ten people globally do not have clean water close to home, causing a ripple of problems. Children spend hours collecting dirty water, often missing out on school, livelihoods are put on hold, and families can lose loved ones to deadly diseases. But the ripple can go both ways. Where there is water, children can go to school, businesses can thrive, and communities can live free from the constant threat of disease.

As part of the WaterAid’s ‘Where there’s water’ winter appeal, ‘12 ways of water’ is a series of daily social media films showcasing the positive change clean water can bring. Films are being released on WaterAid’s channels each day from the 1st– 12th December.
