Hertfordshire County Council embraces more Living Roofs to boost local biodiversity

Lovingly referred to as Bee Bus Stops, Clearchannel’s Living Roofs support native biodiversity, providing a green haven for bees and other pollinators.

Collaborating with North Herts College Stevenage campus, the shelter features local students’ artwork supporting the council’s goal of improving their carbon footprint. This project aims to foster community engagement and creativity.

Debbie McCreath from North Herts College expressed immense pride in the partnership stating:

“The bus stop artwork is bold and reflects the creativity and individual personalities of our students. We are looking forward to seeing the green roof grow and flower and bring wildlife and colour back into this otherwise man-made environment.”

Clear Channel’s goal was to brighten up an otherwise dull area of town and make public transport a more enjoyable experience. As part of the Living Roof installation, the council also pledges to revamp the surrounding area. Here is what Abby Darby from Hertfordshire County Council Intalink had to say:

“For this location, we worked with colleagues in our Highways department to completely rebuild the whole bus stop area. A brand-new footpath has been put in, connecting the bus shelter to ASDA and the College, providing safer access points. A Living Roof has also been installed on the shelter, with the aim to help improve the overall biodiversity in the area. We hope this has created an enjoyable space to visit, for all in the community regardless of if you use the bus or not.”

Designed with sustainability at their core, the roofs feature 100% recycled or upcycled materials and maximise climate resilience benefits while reducing maintenance visits for better overall sustainability. The installation of Living Roofs in Hertfordshire represents a significant stride towards fostering greener, more resilient urban environments.

Through collaborative efforts and innovative design, these initiatives enhance the aesthetic appeal of public spaces and serve as tangible expressions of our collective commitment to environmental responsibility.
