New UN Women Executive Board Bureau 2022 elected with historic full Permanent Representative composition

In elections taking place on 11 January, the UN Women Executive Board opened the year by electing its new Bureau for 2022.

The rotational Presidency of the Executive Board during 2022 is held by the Asia-Pacific Group and is represented by H.E. Ms. Rabab Fatima, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations.

Together with President Fatima, the following Vice-Presidents representing the remaining regional groups were also elected: H.E. Ms. María del Carmen Squeff, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Argentina to the United Nations (representing the Group of Latin American and Caribbean countries); H.E. Mr. Jörundur Valtýsson, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Iceland to the United Nations (representing the Western European and Others Group); H.E. Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations (representing the Eastern European Group); as well as H.E. Mr. Alhaji Fanday Turay, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, who shall continue to represent the African Group for 2022.

The election of the 2022 Bureau marks a historic achievement for the Executive Board, with the elected Bureau representatives consisting entirely of Permanent Representatives for the first time in UN Women’s history.

The Executive Board governs the operational activities of UN Women. The Executive Board Bureau comprises of a President and four Vice-Presidents, each representing one of the five regional groups. The Bureau is elected by the Executive Board each year from among its members, with the presidency rotating among the regional groups on an annual basis.
