Scotland’s national walking charity seeks new trustees

SCOTLAND’S leading walking and wheeling organisation is seeking two experienced professionals to join its Board of Trustees to help to champion walking  to improve public health and tackle the climate emergency.

The charity, which supports everyday walking and wheeling across Scotland’s communities, is recruiting trustees with professional backgrounds in accountancy and fundraising to support its strategic direction and ensure strong governance.

Paths for All plays a vital role in creating the conditions for more people to walk or wheel as part of daily life, aiming to build a happier, healthier and greener Scotland. As part of its long-term “Step It Up” strategy, the organisation is enhancing its leadership and governance to support sustainable growth.

Kevin Lafferty, Chief Executive Officer of Paths for All, said: “Walking is one of the most accessible and powerful tools we have to boost physical and mental health, reduce inequalities and create a low-carbon future. Our trustees help ensure we stay on course to make walking the natural choice for everyone, every day, and everywhere.”

The charity is specifically seeking individuals with skills in either financial management or income generation to bolster the organisation’s impact as it responds to increasing demand and shifting public funding priorities.

Those applying for the trustee with financial expertise should hold a relevant qualification such as ACA, ACCA or CIMA, CA, member of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland or bring significant experience in charity or corporate finance. The successful appointee will help guide Paths for All’s financial strategy and ensure continued compliance with best practice and regulation.

Chair of the Board, James Ogilvie, said: “Participating in our Board meetings, visits and discussions plays a vital role in shaping Paths for All. By becoming a trustee, you’re supporting a worthwhile cause and giving something back. Although we cover important and consequential matters, we do so in an atmosphere of camaraderie and fun.”

Meanwhile, the charity is also recruiting for a trustee with a strong background in fundraising, including community giving and corporate partnerships. This individual will play a key role in developing new revenue streams and strengthening relationships with donors, sponsors and grant-making bodies.

Paul Kelly, who has been on the board since 2018 said: “Paths for All works to promote walking in many ways and to many populations in Scotland. For an academic who researches walking promotion, it is hugely rewarding to see this in action in the real world. I have learned so much from my experience on the Board and have thoroughly enjoyed trying to support the work of the charity.”

Applicants do not need prior board experience but must share a passion for increasing physical activity through walking and improving the environment and wellbeing of Scotland’s people.

Nanette Mutrie, Director and current Board member, added: “Being on the board of Paths for All creates the chance to influence how we create a nation where everyone walks every day. There are various skills required to help us meet our ambitions – your experience could be exactly what we’re looking for.”

Paths for All’s mission is to support people in Scotland to be active every day. They work to make walking and wheeling more accessible by addressing transport and health inequalities, creating walkable neighbourhoods, and supporting behaviour change across communities

The Board meets quarterly in Stirling, with additional online committee meetings scheduled as needed. Trustees typically commit one to two days per quarter to attend meetings, strategy sessions, and the occasional event.
