Synopsys’ 2020 Corporate Social Responsibility Report Highlights Ambitious Action Amid Challenging Year

Synopsys has released their second annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report on their environmental, social, and governance performance.

Synopsys technology is at the heart of innovations that are changing the way we work and play. Autonomous vehicles. Artificial intelligence. The cloud. 5G. These breakthroughs are ushering in the era of Smart Everything―where devices are getting smarter, everything’s connected, and security is essential. This report highlights our CSR commitment to a “Smart Future” that is sustainable, fair, and secure. Their Smart Future program focus is on addressing our own operational impact on the world as well as our ability to positively influence others around us.

“Yes, the challenges we face are great. But Synopsys brings unique problem-solving skills and a history of making what seemed impossible, part of everyday life. As we apply these skills to achieving a smart future, we look forward to working and sharing our progress with you.”
— Aart de Geus, Chairman and Co-CEO, and Chi-Foon Chan, President and Co-CEO

In 2020, Synopsys also announced their pledge to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25% by 2024, in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global temperature rise within 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. As part of the drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25%, Synopsys joined the largest corporate aggregated clean energy procurement agreement to accelerate the development of renewable energy.

Here are some of their CSR accomplishments from 2020:

  • COVID-19 Response: During the pandemic, we prioritized the health of our Synopsys team and their families, deployed time-proven business continuity procedures, and provided support for the vulnerable in the communities where we live and work.
  • Inclusion & Diversity: We refreshed and broadened our internal goals to include Black, Latin, and Indigenous (BLI) employees; rolled out an Inclusive Leader training program for managers; increased representation of women on our Board of Directors to 33%; and attained an external hiring rate of 27% women.
  • Climate Action: 2020 marked our second consecutive year of being a certified CarbonNeutral® company in alignment with The CarbonNeutral Protocol.
  • Synopsys for Good: Our social impact program brings together employee volunteer time and giving, tech expertise, and philanthropy to bring STEM education, essential community needs, and environmental sustainability into the communities in which we work. In 2020, we donated $3.6 million to non-profit organizations worldwide.

These highlights capture only a portion of the overall CSR efforts. They invite you to read the report for the full story of what was accomplished in 2020.
