Humans are using natural resources faster than the Earth’s ecosystems can renew them, according to Global Footprint Network, an international research organization that changes the way humanity manages biological resources. In just seven months, we use a year’s worth of food, fiber, timber, and forested land area with the capacity to absorb our carbon emissions. This year, Earth Overshoot Day — when humans have used as much as nature can regenerate in the whole year — falls on July 29 the earliest date yet. For the last two years, Schneider Electric, the…

Earth Overshoot Day 2018 is August 1, the earliest date ever
On August 1, humanity will use nature’s resource budget for the entire year, according to Global Footprint Network, a research organization that pioneered the Ecological Footprint resource accounting metric. Carbon emissions make up 60 percent of the Ecological Footprint, which measures humanity’s demand for natural resources. Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s annual demand on nature exceeds what Earth’s ecosystems can regenerate in that year. Earth Overshoot Day has moved from late September in 1997 to August 1 this year, the earliest date since the world first…

Global Footprint Network, an international research organization, is marking Earth Overshoot Day with the launch of a new mobile-friendly Footprint calculator at www.footprintcalculator.org. Earth Overshoot Day is the date when humanity’s annual demand on nature exceeds what Earth can regenerate over the entire year. This year Earth Overshoot Day falls on August 2, the earliest date yet. The costs of this global ecological overspending include deforestation, drought, fresh-water scarcity, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The new Footprint Calculator allows users to measure…
