NERC pivots investment in atmospheric research into new technologies

NERC is transitioning its funding of atmospheric science infrastructure to exploit more flexible, scalable and sustainable technologies. The Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM), funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and operated by the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), will cease operations at the end of this financial year. Following review, NERC has concluded that the aircraft no longer offers value for money to the public because of a significant increase in costs and low planned utilisation. Fixing Our Broken Planet gallery attracts over 2 million visitors

A new gallery, co-funded by NERC, has welcomed more than two million visitors since opening at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in April last year. Fixing Our Broken Planet is now the museum’s second most visited space, after the iconic dinosaur exhibits. 12 projects have been launched to explore the gaps and improve integration between the financial system and biodiversity. The new projects are part of the first phase of the ‘integrating biodiversity into finance: building a nature-positive future’ initiative and will start in 2023. The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has appointed Freshwater Quality Champions to lead a new programme that will study water quality of UK rivers.
