Brazil Announces Expanded Commitment to Community-Led Conservation in the Amazon

The government of Brazil and a broad coalition of partners expanded their commitment to conserving the Amazon with the launch of a new initiative — ARPA Comunidades (ARPA Communities). Over 15 years, ARPA Comunidades will benefit more than 130,000 people and reduce deforestation pressure in 60 sustainable-use protected areas spanning 58.6 million acres, an area twice the size of Ohio. Hyram Yarbro sparks social change for forest conservation

Fundación Natura Bolivia, the indigenous people of the Bajo Paragua forest, and Selfless by Hyram have joined forces to hold the line on deforestation in the Amazon, announcing the creation of the 2.05-million-acre Bajo Paragua San Ignacio and Concepcion Municipal Protected Areas. With support from the partnership, the communities will manage the new protected areas which are also home to spider monkeys, jaguars and at least 1,273 vertebrate species.
