Tesco Joins Sustainable Fisheries Partnership in New Initiative to Protect Ocean Wildlife

Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Whale and Dolphin Conservation has announced the completion of an independent audit of the risks to ocean wildlife in the fisheries that supply seafood to UK retailer Tesco. Tesco electrifies deliveries to more than 400 city centre stores

In an industry first, Tesco has become the first retailer to launch a zero-emission electric lorry to make deliveries from its distribution centres to stores in city centres. The first electrically-powered lorry of its kind, made by Renault Trucks, is now delivering to more than 400 stores in Greater London, with further electric lorries entering service in the coming months. UK Supermarkets back zero-deforestation soy initiative

UK supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose this week invested US$ 11 million in the Responsible Commodities Facility (RCF), a new system of financial incentives for farmers in Brazil who commit to deforestation- and conversion-free (DCF) soy cultivation.  The RCF will provide finance to 36 farms in the Cerrado region of Brazil, producing 75,000 tons of soy per year (for four years), resulting in the conservation of around 11,000 ha of native vegetation, 4,200 in excess of legal reserves. Dairy farmers unite to bring back threatened swifts and swallows to UK countryside

In recent years these species, which are all summer migrants and fly 6000 miles to Africa to raise their young and feed on insects, have been dwindling and failing to return due to habitat loss and climate change.   But now Tesco is working with its network of 500 dairy farmers on a project to provide a safe haven for these migratory birds and boost biodiversity.   The farmers, all members of the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG), are being encouraged to install 5000 nest boxes on their farmland – an ideal habitat to the birds…
