Tesco customers donate 10 million meals to FareShare

Generous Tesco customers have donated over 4,400 tonnes of food, the equivalent of more than 10 million meals’ worth of food, to FareShare since launching in 2015.

There are over 1,800 Permanent Collection Points (PCPs) in Tesco stores collecting food for FareShare across the UK, enabling customers to donate long-life food, such as tinned vegetables, cereals, and pasta, to FareShare year-round.

In January 2024 alone, customers donated the equivalent of more than 290k meals to frontline charities via FareShare.

All customer donations are collected by a local FareShare site or charity to be turned into food parcels or nutritious meals for people in the community.

Ruth Downes, Head of Development at FareShare Greater Manchester, said: “The ambient food that is donated by Tesco shoppers at the collection point in store is absolutely vital to the 280+ charities we support across Greater Manchester, supporting those that need it most.

“We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all the shoppers who donate and also to all the Tesco staff and community champions who work so hard to get these donations to us.”

Claire De Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “This is a fantastic milestone in our partnership with FareShare and is only possible thanks to the tremendous generosity of our customers. Whether it’s a tin of beans or a multipack of cereal their donations continue to make a huge difference to communities across the UK.”

Polly Hoffman, Head of Retail at FareShare, said: “We are so thankful to each and every Tesco customer that has donated a tin of vegetables, bag of pasta or box of teabags to support FareShare during these increasingly difficult times – every single item donated makes a massive difference to the charities and community groups we supply food to.”

Customers can donate to FareShare year-round by adding an item to the PCP stand at their local Tesco store.
