Founded in 2013, Arts Emergency began life as a small mentoring project in Hackney. Set up by comedian Josie Long and activist Neil Griffiths, the friends decided they had to do something meaningful to help young people affected by austerity and rising tuition fees. Arts Emergency has since grown into a charity with bases across the UK and a community of thousands of volunteers. Co-op wraps up the year with plastic and glitter free festive range

Co-op is removing plastic as well as glitter from its entire Christmas celebration range, cutting out 1.1 million pieces (eight tonnes) of plastic. The move applies to all of the retailer’s own-brand Christmas cards, gift wrap and bags and crackers – which launch in selected stores today, Wednesday 4 November – in a bid to reduce single-use plastics.
