CIPR backs global research into use of communication technology

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) has partnered with public relations and communication digital transformation consultancy Purposeful Relations to conduct a global survey into how the profession understands and uses technology.

The research partners also include PRovoke Media, ICCO (International Communication Consultants Organisation) and the WCFA (World Communication Forum Association). The research is supported by Stickybeak which is running the survey on its chatbot research platform, as well as communication technology companies NewsWhip, PressPage and PRophet.

The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and everyone who participates is entered into a prize draw to win a pass to the PRovoke Global Summit 2023. Take the survey.

The research is led by Purposeful Relations co-founder Stuart Bruce who previously served as a CIPR board director (2017-19).

Communication technology is fundamentally changing the public relations profession. Through the AIinPR Panel, the CIPR has led the way in researching the impact of artificial intelligence on public relations. This global research looks at the full range of communication technology including how it is changing as a result of AI. It is one of a number of research initiatives we are undertaking in this area just now and will help inform the learning, training and support that the CIPR provides to its members and further develop the profession.
Professor Anne Gregory Hon FCIPR, CIPR Board

The communications and public relations industry is often seen to be lagging behind other professions such as law and finance in its use of technology. There are more than 9,000 MarTech tools used in marketing and advertising, but it’s not as clear what tools are being used in communications and public relations. The research aims to understand how tools are used, how well they are understood and what practitioners think are the biggest opportunities and threats.

A summary of the results of the global communication technology survey will be published on PRovoke Media and the full report will be available freely to CIPR members to help inform them on priorities for professional development and investment.
