Healthcare Workers’ Foundation Appoints Charity Veteran, Julie Child, As Chief Executive

The Healthcare Workers’ Foundation (HWF), the charity started by and for healthcare workers in the midst of the pandemic, has appointed Julie Child as Chief Executive to lead the charity’s activity.

Working closely with the charity’s Founder and Chairman, Dr Dominic Pimenta, Julie will spearhead the charity’s strategy as the NHS and healthcare workers continue grappling with the UK’s pandemic recovery.

The appointment marks the next step in HWF’s journey, having launched not long after the UK faced its first major lockdown in early 2020. Julie’s appointment will ensure the charity continues to future-proof it’s provisions that support healthcare workers post-pandemic, while also ensuring frontline staff have access to adequate welfare and wellbeing support both now and into the future.

Commenting on the appointment, Dr Dominic Pimenta, founder and Chairman of HWF, said: “Julie’s diverse experience across the charity sector will be immensely valuable to what we’re aiming to achieve moving forward, and we’re delighted to welcome her to the team at such a pivotal point for the charity and the NHS more broadly. Healthcare workers across the UK will benefit hugely from the expertise Julie can offer HWF, and we’re excited to roll out a variety of new services that can provide even further support to frontline staff after everything they’ve done for us over the last two years.”

Julie Child, newly appointed CEO of HWF, said: “I am thrilled to join HWF at such an important point in the charity’s journey. It’s been nearly two years since the NHS faced its biggest challenge – frontline workers have gone above and beyond to ensure our communities are safe from COVID-19, often putting their own health and wellbeing on the line. Sadly, some healthcare workers have lost family members while tragically too many NHS staff lost their own lives while fulfilling their duties. This has taken an enormous toll on the workforce – both emotionally and physically – and this is where HWF comes in. The pandemic appears to be coming to an end, however the impact of it will be felt amongst healthcare workers for years. It’s imperative that our charity is there for those workers that risked their lives to keep hospitals operational when the rest of the country was locked down. I am so proud to be able to oversee this next chapter and ensure we can make a difference to the lives of healthcare workers.”

Julie has worked in the charity sector for 20 years and brings with her a wealth of experience across the strategic management, fundraising, recruitment, marketing and communications disciplines. Previously, Julie worked across senior management roles for a variety of small healthcare charities in addition to the National Trust. More recently, she worked as General Manager for Race Against Blood Cancer, the charity established to increase stem cell donors from minority groups to improve outcomes for blood cancer patients.

Julie added: “My admiration and support for the NHS spans many years. Several members of my family have had their lives saved thanks to NHS staff, and the opportunity I have now as CEO is providing me with a chance to personally give something back to the people who were there for us when we needed them – I know so many other families across the UK share this experience. While the post-COVID recovery will not be an easy feat, HWF is equipped with an amazing team and network who can, with the help of our donors, ensure frontline staff can receive the support they need to get through this.”
