Mars are proud to have been recognized by the Climate Group for our Renewable Acceleration program with the RE100 Leadership Award in the Market Trailblazer category.
11 years after Mars helped create RE100 to encourage companies adopt renewable electricity to cover 100% of their direct operations, it feels great to be on stage and being recognized for extending our renewables commitment well beyond that.
The RE100 market trailblazer award celebrates RE100 members who are committed to driving market change, communicate transparently about the barriers they face; and collaborate with companies, utilities and governments to drive change.
Mars recently took a major step in our decarbonization journey with a new initiative designed to speed up the shift from fossil fuels to clean energy, not just for Mars owned sites and direct operations, but across our entire value chain.
This means Mars are helping to bring the totality of our electricity usage to the renewables market, from the farms that grow ingredients to the trucks that deliver products, and even the energy used by consumers at home to enjoy their favorite Mars products, like Ben’s Original™ and SNICKERS® Ice Cream, or at their BANFIELD™ veterinarian’s office. Implementing this strategy could cut an estimated 3 million tonnes of carbon emissions from our full value chain – about 10% of our current total footprint.
“For Mars, Renewable Acceleration is a performance accelerator, cutting emissions at a scale and speed we could never achieve through traditional value chain engagement approaches,” said Kevin Rabinovitch, Global VP Sustainability. “We are delighted that the Climate Group RE100 recognizes our effort. We hope this will inspire other companies to join us.”
Renewable Acceleration is part of our broader Net Zero strategy, which also includes tackling deforestation, supporting climate-smart agriculture1, improving transport and embedding sustainability across the business.
