Save the Children Announces Press Fellowship Focused on Inequality in America

Save the Children has announced a press fellowship to support journalists covering inequality in America. Selected journalists will have embargoed access to a first-ever ranking of more than 2,600 U.S. counties, and all 50 states, on how well they protect and provide for their children, as well as exclusive briefings with experts and a $1,000 reporting grant. Journalists will participate remotely in an exclusive expert briefing the week of May 11, and will have early access to the data and report researchers, before it is launched in Save the Children’s annual Childhood Report on June 2, 2020.

The county-level rankings expose huge disparities in opportunities and resources available to children, even within the same state—inequalities that have been magnified by the coronavirus pandemic. The rankings are based four indicators: severe malnutrition, poor education, teenage pregnancy and early death due to ill health, accident, murder or suicide. This research is in addition to Save the Children’s annual ranking of all 50 states, as well as 170 countries, on how children are prioritized and protected.

Save the Children began working in the United States in 1932, serving Appalachia’s children and families hardest-hit by the Great Depression. Today, the nonprofit organization implements programs in more than 200 of America’s most remote and vulnerable communities, working to narrow the education gap for children living in rural poverty, giving them the best chance for success in school and life.

The fellowship is intended for reporters who are interested in or cover equality, poverty, data, education, health, and socioeconomic disparity.

Journalists interested in applying for this fellowship opportunity should complete the application by clicking here. Application deadline: May 1, 2020. For more information, please contact Negin Janati at njanati@savechildren.org.
