Food waste contributes 10% to global emissions but 9 out of 10 countries’ NDCs fail to focus on food loss and waste

A new report shows of the 195 countries attending COP29, only 12 have committed to reducing food waste and just 17 to tackling food loss. In total, 24 countries (12%) commit to reducing ​food loss and/or waste​ while 88% attending the global climate conference have made no commitments to address either so far in their NDCs. ‘Our global food system is broken and is wrecking the environment. WRAP urges hospitality and food service CEOs and leaders to take a stand against food waste

The hospitality and food service (HaFS) sector throws away 1.1 million tonnes of food every year. 75% of this food could have been eaten, costing businesses and organisations £3.2 billion. Guardians of Grub, a food waste prevention programme for HaFS delivered by global environmental action NGO WRAP, is calling on the sector’s CEOs and directors to rise up and lead the way in tackling food waste, ensuring that all food purchased is eaten and not binned. WRAP proposes government consider policy change to expedite removal of packaging on 21 fresh produce items

On the eve of WRAP’s Courtauld Commitment Summit 2024, WRAP published a policy recommendation paper, to support action towards its call for fruit and veg to be sold without packaging. The recommendation is for a packaging ban on 21 fruit and veg items, to be developed via a formal consultation process. This recommendation has been created in consultation with industry stakeholders from across the value chain.
