CIPR to cease engagement on X

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) has recently announced it will cease active posting on X (formerly Twitter), citing growing concerns over declining engagement, platform governance, and the proliferation of misinformation.

The decision follows a comprehensive review of the Institute’s social media strategy which revealed rapidly declining engagement and increasing challenges in maintaining meaningful professional discourse on the platform. The Institute has also expressed concerns about its responsibility to members regarding exposure to misinformation and uncertain relationship between X’s owners and the U.S government.

The Institute’s central accounts will remain live and accessible to provide members access to historical content and data while the organisation strengthens its presence on LinkedIn and Instagram and launches its new BlueSky channel.

This transition will be implemented across the Institute’s main accounts, with CIPR Groups and Networks developing plans to complete their transition away from X by early 2025.

Over the past year we’ve observed concerning shifts in both the quality and quantity of professional engagement on X. As the professional body for public relations practitioners, we have a responsibility to ensure our channels foster meaningful dialogue in spaces that align with our values and professional standards. The increasing presence of misinformation, alongside other operational and ethical considerations, has led us to take this decision to step away from X. We will review this decision in the coming months.

We’re grateful for the engagement of our more than 45,000 followers on X over the years and invite them to join us on alternative platforms, where we can continue to serve our community’s needs and maintain the high standards our profession demands.
Alastair McCapra, CIPR Chief Executive
